Act + Acre's Essentials

Beauty, Beauty Review, Cruelty-Free, WellnessKristenComment

Once upon a time, I stepped out of my shower and smelled something disgusting. I had just washed my hair and body, so it couldn’t have been me, right? Wrong! My hair smelled like a bottle of expired Nair.

I quickly started Googling: “Why does my hair smell?” “Smelly hair after a shower” “My hair smells bad after shampooing.”

Well, it turns out that my night-showering lifestyle had caught up to me. I knew that sleeping with wet hair could cause breakage, but it turns out that it can also cause *drumroll* mildew

Yes, you read that right! If you sleep with wet hair, there’s a good chance that you’ll grow mildew in your hair. In! Your! Hair!

Now, it’s not confirmed that I was actually growing mildew in my hair. But the thought was enough to scare me into switching up my routine. I remembered a brand I used to sell at Naked Retail: Act + Acre. The focus of their products was all about scalp health. I knew from reciting my shpiel to customers that they were truly an amazing brand. So, I ordered a pack of The Essentials and excitedly awaited my ticket to non-smelly hair.

Act + Acre is a brand created for all hair types with the Earth in mind. Usually, shampoo and conditioner are made by mixing all the ingredients in a huge vat and using lots of heat. This method boils out all the nutrients in the ingredients that are essential for your hair.

Instead, Act + Acre uses a cold-processed method, which involves - you guessed it - cold water and high pressure. This consumes 90% less energy than the typical heat method. It’s better for the Earth and better for you and your hair.

The cleanse (aka shampoo), conditioner, and scalp detox that I purchased smell freakin’ amazing. It’s a very subtle, natural scent of ylang-ylang and basil. Of course, their ingredients are as high-quality as their eco-friendly ideals.

I was most excited to try the Scalp Detox because I had never heard of anything like it. It’s made to get all the product buildup out of your scalp. This helps your hair grow more since your hair follicles aren’t clogged with the crap in dry shampoo and other products. Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp!

On the days I wash my hair, I start with the Scalp Detox. I section my hair off and apply the oil directly to my scalp. Sometimes I put some in my hands and rub it on harder to reach areas.

I leave the Detox on for about twenty minutes. In that time, I’ll do my skincare routine, brush my teeth, take my vitamins, and scroll through Instagram for a bit. By that time, I’m all set to jump in the shower and wash it out of my hair with the cleanse.

The Cleanse works like a normal shampoo, but it’s really important to rinse and repeat. The first application doesn’t suds up as much, but the second time around, holy moly, do you feel clean. And that’s without sulfates, which is usually what makes a product suds up!

The Conditioner is pretty standard as well: apply it mid-shaft to ends and leave for five minutes. I’ll usually wash my body and shave my legs while it’s setting.

Across all the products, a little goes a long, long way. I’ve had all of these for around six months and I’m barely a third of the way through all the bottles. Moderation is key with the Detox, since using too much may make your hair oily. But for the Cleanse and Conditioner, all you need is a quarter size and a lot of water. An added bonus is that your hair stays cleaner longer, so you wash less. I typically wash my hair once a week, but I’ve been able to let it go a little longer while using Act + Acre

I can confidently say that my hair is twelve times healthier after using Act + Acre. No exaggeration! Sometimes I’ll look in the mirror at my hair and I’m actually amazed at how good it looks when I haven’t done anything else to it. It’s wild.

And the best part? My hair doesn’t smell anymore! Act + Acre is for a sure a ride or die brand for me. I highly recommend it!

Danessa Myricks Beauty's Waterproof Cushion Liner

Beauty, Beauty Review, Cruelty-FreeKristenComment

I have a love-hate relationship with eyeliner. I used to wear a lot in high school (didn’t everyone?) but as time went on, I realized that it made my eyes look a lot smaller than they already are. So I ditched it for a bit.

Recently, I’ve hopped back on the bandwagon. Sort of. I use black eyeshadow on my lower lid, and sometimes some liquid liner on the top. I’m still getting the hang of getting the look I want. I get uncomfortable with the way I hold the eyeliner, what angle I’m coming at it from… I have to get extremely close to my mirror to be somewhat satisfied.

I bought some white liquid liner when everyone else was using it to recreate the “Rain On Me” looks. I really liked the way it looked on everyone else, and I figured it would help elevate my ~makeup game~ just a bit. So I decided on Danessa Myricks Beauty’s Waterproof Cushion Liner in Cloud Control

Danessa Myricks is pretty fucking iconic. Just take a scroll through her Instagram and you’ll understand why. Her looks are the epitome of artistry. She even teaches other makeup artists at Danessa Myricks University. And her line of makeup is elite.

Basically, I’m obsessed with this eyeliner. I absolutely love the formula! It goes on flawlessly, it’s buildable, and perfect for creating graphic liner looks. I like to use it as a base since it really makes the colors pop. I apply it to my lid and go over it with the eyeshadow of my choice.

The angled brush that comes with the eyeliner is also amazing. At first I was a little nervous using a brush to apply liquid liner since I never had before, but I was blown away by how effortless my wing was, largely due to the brush. I felt like I had a lot of control over where the liner was going.

The only con, at least for me, is how quickly the liner dries. Its product page boasts that the Waterproof Cushion Liner is “immovable when dry,” which is 100% true. It lasts forever and doesn’t smudge at all. However, this makes it harder for me to fix my mistakes. But like I said before, the angled brush makes mistakes few and far between.

So if you’re looking for some new liquid eyeliner, Danessa Myricks Beauty is the way to go. I’ll definitely be buying the Waterproof Cushion Liner in more colors!

Barbie Girl

earrings from SweetCreatureShoppe

My amazing perfect wonderful beautiful talented cousin just started an Etsy shop! This is a HUGE deal, guys. She’s been wearing the sickest handmade earrings to family events for years and finally decided to start selling them. All her designs are so unique and kitschy. I bought two pairs (so far): a pair of mismatched purple gems, and the cutest Barbie shoe earrings in the world!

I’ve literally always been a Barbie girl. And a Bratz girl. And a Polly Pocket girl. And an American Girl girl (I just really like dolls, okay?). So I decided to create a hot pink look to go with these hot pink earrings, and I love the way it turned out!

I used white liquid eyeliner by Danessa Myricks Beauty as a base, then colored it in with a hot pink shade from James Charles’ Morphe palette (both things that I’ll be reviewing soon!). To match, I wore some hot pink lipgloss by Almay. I felt like a literal Barbie, and I loved every second of it. I was about to cry while taking this makeup off before I went to bed.

So, if you’re in the market for some new earrings (or even if you’re not), check out SweetCreatureShoppe on Etsy! And check out my other cousin’s shop on Instagram, the Thrift Gift Shoppe! She just made some tie-dye and bleach masks and I’m obsessed. My cousins are just kicking ass, and I am so here for it.

Glossier's Boy Brow

Beauty, Beauty Review, Cruelty-FreeKristenComment

Let’s have a chat about an ever-evolving beauty trend: eyebrows. We all have them. But no one really knows what the fuck we’re doing with them, do we? Have you seen the trend where people shave off the tails of their eyebrows? Like, why? One of my favorite influencers recently shaved her eyebrows off completely and I had to unfollow her because it looked so horrible. Absolutely heartbreaking. Abby Roberts bleached her eyebrows and had to dye them back because her comments sections were ripping her a new one. PSA: please just leave them alone. Eyebrows are important to your face, and your face is important to me.

When I was younger, thin brows were in. I started getting my unibrow waxed when I was in the sixth grade. It was around when waxing first started getting popular, as well as threading. Waxing salons and threading booths started popping up everywhere.

Eventually, we started loving the bold, bushy brow look. A little tame, but kind of not. Confusing, right? We let them grow out (to a degree) and started filling them in with ABH Dipbrow, etc. I was never one to do anything to my eyebrows. My hair is pretty dark, and my eyebrows are too. The one time I tried filling them in, I looked like a clown.

Nowadays, I go to the salon when my brows look like a crime scene, but for the most part, I tame them myself with some tweezers and a motorized hair remover. Even when my brows are in tip-top shape, I realized a couple of months ago that I needed something to tame them just a bit.

I bought a clear mascara and brow gel duo from e.l.f. just to test them both out. The mascara made my eyes insanely itchy, but the brow gel actually looked great. I loved the sleek look I could get, but sometimes I’d mess around and give myself a feathery look too. The possibilities were endless, and I was on board. But the gel was a little too sticky. Throughout my day, I’d be picking clear flakes out of my hair. It was not the vibe.

So, I decided to invest in a legit brow gel. I read an article on Man Repeller about the best ones out there, and unsurprisingly, Glossier’s Boy Brow topped the list. I had heard of Boy Brow before (who hasn’t?) but I didn’t realize it came in a clear formula until I read up on it. I ordered myself a tube, and I was very impressed.

With Boy Brow, I feel like I have a lot more control over my eyebrows. The small spoolie is perfect for my skinnier brows, and the formula itself isn’t sticky or gooey. It’s almost like a cream. I’m no longer pulling crap out of my eyebrows, but they still look great. I’ve started combing through my brows a bit even when I’m not wearing makeup. It’s a great way to pull my face together when I don’t really feel like it.

So basically I just came here to say that Boy Brow is definitely worth the hype. If you’ve been waiting to give it a try, I highly suggest doing so.

Supergoop! Glowscreen

Beauty Review, Cruelty-Free, WellnessKristenComment

Settle in gang, I need to tell you about this legendary sunscreen from Supergoop! For reference, every time I type the word Supergoop!, I’m actually yelling it in my head. It’s pretty fun.

I heard about Supergoop! a while ago, but had never given their sunscreen a try. In the past, I’ve used whatever I have in the house, which is usually something from Neutrogena, or Kiss My Face. I used to be a strong sunscreen advocate, but over time, I’ve gotten super lazy and I always forget to use it.

But during quarantine, I read an article about how important it is to use sunscreen even when we’re not going outdoors. The main reason is that windows block UVB rays, but not UVA rays, which are more harmful to your skin. But another, which I learned somewhere on my Instagram feed, was that the blue light from our various screens is harmful to our skin as well as our eyes. So, I searched Sephora for a sunscreen that would protect me from UVA rays and blue light, and stumbled upon Supergoop!’s Glowscreen

The Ingredients

Where do I start with this magic potion? The ingredients are *chef’s kiss* beautiful. All of Supergoop!’s products are cruelty-free. They try to use the cleanest ingredients possible, and they even have a “no list” full of ingredients they’ll never use. The main ingredients are a “Hydration Cocktail” (hyaluronic acid, vitamin B5, and niacinamide), cocoa peptides, which help block blue light, and sea lavender, a powerful antioxidant that also aids in hydration.

The Formula

The main draw to Glowscreen is that it leaves you with a dewy finish. I don’t like looking dewy, and I didn’t realize that this was supposed to be a dewy formula until after I received it. But I tried it anyway, and I actually loved it. I was afraid it would make me look sweaty (which is usually the case), but it blends into my skin so nicely and gives it a nice little glow.

It also smells so, so good. I’m a big fan of sunscreen smelling like sunscreen, instead of something fruity and weird.

And, a little goes a long way! I’ve been using my tube every day for a little over two months now, and there’s still a ton left. The tube suggests using a dime size, but I usually use less.

The Results

It really, really works. I haven’t gotten one sunburn on my face since I started using it. The true test was when I went for a motorcycle ride with my dad. I applied Glowscreen to my face but didn’t put sunscreen on the rest of my body because as previously mentioned, I can be lazy and forgetful. I got a killer sunburn on my neck, chest, and scalp, but absolutely nothing on my face.

It was a good reminder that sunscreen works! It protects you and your skin! I just watched a Tik Tok of a girl who had a huge scar on her back because she had a teeny, cancerous mole that needed to be removed. We need to take care of ourselves. Making sunscreen a step in my skincare routine has helped me remember to put it on every day. It sits in my cabinet with the rest of my products. Glowscreen also works as a primer for your makeup, which is a huge bonus. There’s literally no reason not to use it. I know there’s still a lot to learn about sunscreen, and that sometimes it can get confusing. But Supergoop! is a company that makes sun care fun.

If you couldn’t tell from this glowing (haha!) review, I very highly recommend Glowscreen. I just purchased some scalp sunscreen from Supergoop!, and I’m so excited to try it. I’ll let you know how it goes! (I’m assuming that it’ll go very well).
